Our Values.

Our Mission.

The Company’s mission is to “create simple ways to have all waste collected and recycled globally and constantly exceed customer expectations”.

Core Values.

The Company’s core values provide a solid foundation to grow the business. The first step in creating a customer-centric culture is instilling such values in the Company’s vision and mission statement. The next step is to engage and empower employees to take it to the next level, which is to please customers beyond expectation.

Here at Kollect we understand we cannot guarantee a good customer experience every time with so many third-party providers involved, so Kollect embraces the ‘comeback’. When a mistake is made, the Company holds up its hand and acknowledges it. It is how it responds that counts and the Company goes over and above expectations to ensure that the customer is always informed as to how it is going to rectify things as fast as possible. For Kollect, it’s all about the communication.

1. Exceed Expectations: deliver ‘Wow’ through customer service

Discussing how the Company can improve its customer experience is something the team does hourly. The Company operates an internal channel called ‘WOW’ and ‘UNWOW’e. Every department posts a detailed note of the shortfall, issues, complaint or feedback from customers in the UNWOW channel. The team then discusses and reviews what went wrong the previous day in all departments and what processes can be introduced to fix the mistakes and deliver a better service. The team spends in excess of 80 hours each week understanding where the Company let customers down or how it can improve their experience. At Kollect, staff try to do everything with a WOW. The Company will always go over and above for its customers and when it does, it puts these in the WOW channel. The team like to do hundreds of wows each month (this can include free pizza, junk removal, bin collection for a year). Customers don’t expect it and it’s just a small token of the Company’s appreciation. The Company also measures ‘Hot Potatoes’, which is when issues are extremely serious. This happens, for example, if a bin collection is missed twice from a customer. The key metric for this value that Kollect measures is the number of Wows, Unwows and Hot Potatoes as a key metric in the business.

2. Be Authentic: positive, with a can-do attitude

Everyone has experienced a situation where the person serving you has to refer to somebody else who then has to refer to another person before a decision is made. Kollect doesn’t want that and, therefore, hires employees who buy into the value of customer service and the management can trust to make decisions and look out for the customers’ interests at large. Neither does the Company use scripts; it’s about trusting our team to be themselves and always put the customer first. The key metric measured here again is the Wows which show how often staff have gone over and above for customers.

3. Honest: be straight up, always do right by customers

The Company acknowledges that employees are human, the customers are human—everyone makes mistakes. In Kollect, we always take ownership of mistakes and strives to make it up to the customer in whatever way they can. The key metric for this value is the number of 5 – 1 star reviews the Company gets from customers as a measure of its culture.

4. Responsive: be prompt, always keeping the customer in the loop

Whenever customers make contact with Kollect, they do it for a reason. Whatever it is, the team responds and gets back to the customer promptly right up to 11pm each and every night. The average response time is one minute and 30 seconds, something of which the management is very proud. The key metric for this value is measuring phone calls that are dropped or answered and the average response times for all online interactions using Intercom for this metrics.

Our Technology.

Digitalization and data sit at the Centre of our business.

We are using technology to change and improve customer experience for both customers and our waste partners. The original Kollect MVP platform was built in January 2016, with an updated version being built and released a year later. This site was built in PHP, and help us grow in size. When we started adding new business verticals we started to outgrow the technical capabilities of the existing platform. We made a decision to rebuild the site in Python, and scoped out everything that we would need and began developing. We are now migrating the code onto Ruby on Rails. We are using AWS as our hosting provider, Ruby on Rails as the Backend, React JS in the Frontend and Prismic as our headless CMS.

Digitalising the Customer Journey.

Systems designed to minimise manual error and admin and enhance your customer experience:

  • Booking – 24/7 online booking via desktop or smartphone
  • Integration – API integration with your in-house system
  • Job comms – text & email updates with vehicle tracking
  • Online MI – live job status, photos & waste documentation
  • Reporting – monthly reports on compliance, costs & service

Making Waste Collection More Efficient.

We partner with a national network of local waste businesses with overlapping coverage. Our platform allocates collections & skip deliveries to the nearest operator with capacity and uses App based technology to connect to them as they undertake the work. This helps operators use fleet more efficiently and reduces fuel miles. It also allows us to provide customers with a very reliable, compliant and cost effective waste collection service nationwide.

Environmentally Responsible.

Environmentally & Socially Responsible Waste Disposal.

Here at Kollect we are always committed to maximising diversion of waste from landfill, reducing carbon footprint per collection and supporting local business.

Landfill Diversion.

  • Waste materials are taken to licensed commercial recycling facilities
  • We prioritise disposal facilities with the highest landfill diversion
  • Each disposal is logged digitally & a scanned tipping receipt uploaded
  • Ensuring we have a robust waste audit trail for every collection
  • 96% avoids landfill through energy from waste and recycling

Lower Carbon Footprint.

  • We encourage man & van collection over skip hire
  • It’s not just cheaper, it’s better for the environment
  • Man & van requires one visit to site per collection
  • Skip hire needs one for delivery & one for collection
  • Skip lorries are also more polluting than tipper trucks

Socially Responsible.

  • There are already enough collection vehicles & skip lorries
  • We don’t need to add more trucks to the roads
  • We just have to make existing resources work more efficiently
  • Kollect’s technology helps makes this happen
  • By connecting local operators with capacity to nearby demand
  • Cutting fuel miles per collection & keeping business local

Our Story.

Kollect was Founded by Three very Different People.

Myself (John O’Connor), Robbie Skuse and John Hegarty – three wires in a plug. I’m won’t say that I’m the live-wire and John Hegarty is the grounding earth wire with Robbie as the neutral in the middle because, well that wouldn’t be entirely accurate. What I will say is that without all three wires, the plug wouldn’t work, and someone would probably get a shock.

All the plug does is switch the company on. It absolutely doesn’t work without a really good team inside it, and that’s exactly what we have. For a company that deals, almost predominately in rubbish, you’d wonder where the passion and enthusiasm comes from each day but you’d need to see our team to believe it. Every day, without fail, it’s there.

I’m not saying it’s perfect. Literally no job is perfect (and I once knew a chap whose job it was to taste Cornettos). Of course there are days when someone feels like throwing a printer out the window, but that’s the nature of life, not just life in business.

We started Kollect with a vision and our team absolutely buy into it. On day one, when it was just the three of us we wrote that vision on a white board with a permanent marker (we didn’t know it was permanent at the time) – “We will create simple ways to get all waste collected and recycled globally, creating WOW through customer service”. Simple for us means allowing customers to find us easily through online search, receive a quote for the job, a date for collection and the ability to book and pay online or using cash. Ultimately, the customer is totally in charge of their waste collection needs.

The WOW factor is something that we felt should always be fundamental. It’s not a part of the business – it is the business. If you create an efficient product and wrap it in a service that makes the customer feel respected, appreciated and most importantly of all, special, then you shouldn’t go far wrong. Our team watched us collect people’s rubbish in the back of our cars. They watched us take calls from customers whilst doing something as trivial as getting married. We’d like to think that we have led by example, which is why, if a customer is knocking, and there’s nobody available at that minute to answer, the chap who designed the website will answer. Because our team is so important, we’ve had to do some thinking, and learn from some mistakes about how to build the perfect foundation for our business to grow. We like to hire based on recommendations, however, if we meet our soulmate in the interview room, they’ll more than likely get hired.

It’s all about thinking for yourself, but always thinking of others – your co-workers and your customers. If you’re good at your job, but you’re a moody so-and-so, then sorry, we can’t work with you. If you can’t multitask, sorry, best find somewhere else. If you’re the type of person who spends most of the day looking at the clock, we feel sorry for you, but we don’t want you working with us.

I love our team. They’re not perfect, but they’re honest, and that’s all that we can ask for (as well as all the other stuff of course). We’ve all got each others’ backs and collectively, genuinely, we’ve got our customers’ backs.

Leadership Team.

The Founders.

Professional and outstanding ideas from our passionate team makes us unique in every sense.

john o connor

John O’Connor: Co-Founder & CEO.

John O’Connor has a BBS Degree from the University of Limerick and has 15 years’ experience as a founder and CEO running various start-up companies with online, retail and waste emphasis. He has secured investment on three different occasions and has successfully sold a business. A customer service fanatic and a passionate leader, John has a vision to lead Kollect to £1billion in turnover and beyond. John has extensive experience in the waste industry and has been the founder and CEO of two waste start-up companies, Kollect (2016), and The BIGbin Company (2010). Both of these companies have developed totally innovative and first-to-market B2C solutions and have created their own niches within the waste industry. BIGbin is the first waste drop-off company globally and has contracts with Top Oil and is about to scale locations nationally with Circle K. BIGbin, which is trading since 2010, is profitable. Both these businesses are driven by a vision to make it simple for people to get waste collected and recycled globally. John has led BIGbin and now Kollect to 6 major awards including Kollect being crowned Ireland’s most innovative start-up in 2017 at the National Start-up Awards. At Kollect, John and his team have built an exemplary employee culture that consistently delivers exceptional service experiences to an immensely loyal customer base. John is responsible for company strategy, day-to-day leadership, customer experience and strategic partnerships. His strengths are business development, business planning, digital marketing and team building.

Robbie Skuse: Co-Founder and Head of Business Development.

Robbie Skuse, Head of Business Development, graduated with 1st Class Honours in Business Information Systems (‘BIS’) from University College Cork, Ireland in 2014. BIS is a course finely spilt between computer science and commerce, giving Robbie a great skill set for entry into the entrepreneurial world. Before graduating, Robbie worked for Permanent TSB in Ireland and Fidelity Investments in Rhode Island, USA. Robbie began his entrepreneurial career by setting up two start-ups, LaunchFair and upChore before co-founding Kollect. Robbie has been heavily involved in the Irish start-up scene for some time, becoming Cork’s lead organiser for TechStars’ Start-up Weekend and a European Facilitator. Robbie was the lead organiser for the first Waterford Start-up Weekend in 2019, as well as facilitating at start-up weekends across Ireland. Robbie was a runner up in Ireland Best Young Entrepreneur Competition 2018. Having won the Waterford and South of Ireland region, Robbie represented Kollect at a National Level competing with Ireland’s best budding entrepreneurs. Robbie has been recognised nationally for his relentless work in Kollect and the Irish start-up scene and has twice been listed in Ireland’s “30 Under 30" (a list of the 30 young entrepreneurial and tech stars in Ireland).

John Hegarty: Co-Founder and Head of Operations.

John Hegarty is a qualified Sustainable Energy Engineer with extensive experience in operational roles. Prior to 2009, he spent 5 years as operations manager in a large law firm in Waterford city, managing 17 members of staff. He then spent 4 years as a self-employed energy assessor, carrying out hundreds of building assessments throughout Ireland. At this time, keen to develop his sectoral skills - while also self-employed - John returned to college and completed a degree in Sustainable Energy Engineering gaining 1st Class Honours. After meeting John O’Connor and Robbie Skuse, they collectively started a home cleaning platform called upChore before they set up Kollect. John has spent the last three and a half years working in the waste sector supporting the set up and management of a number of new verticals, helping to lead their aggressive growth strategies. John has extensive knowledge of the waste sector, particularly the logistical aspects of the business. This includes route mapping, segregation of waste streams, weighing technology and the different disposal and recycling options available in the sector. Over the past 3 years, John has gained valuable insight into fleet management and waste operations relating to junk removal, bin collection and skip rental. For the last 3 years, John has headed up the general day-to-day operations of the business. As the business has grown, he has been consistently training and handing over different verticals to other employees and has freed time to focus on improving operational and logistical efficiencies throughout the business.

Our Business.

In today's world, operating with a genuine mission is essential to establishing an enduring brand and successful business. Over the last 3 years, we've made early progress towards our two-part vision, but the opportunity that exists for Kollect in the waste market is immense. Step one of our company mission - creating “simple ways to have all waste collected and recycled” - is accomplished by allowing customers find us easily, get a price and book in a job at a date and time that suits them, paying online or using cash. It puts the customer totally in charge of their waste collection needs. Our continued focus on improving the customer journey will continue to attract consumer “micro-moments” in which a customer thinks of a waste need and then immediately tries to fulfil it as quickly as possible, typically through a digital transaction. Market waste needs may vary from country to country, as will regulation and we may need to change our offering to meet the customer and regularity requirements, but the premise never changes: people always have a need for waste to be removed. The second part of our vison is “to always exceed customer expectations". Good companies make profits, but great companies also win people over. We have built a company based on a core set of 4 values: Honesty, Wow service, Responsiveness and a Can-do Attitude.

Our Waste Partners

The Kollect platform, therefore, provides a significant competitive advantage to private companies competing for market share. Our technology connects our customers with the nearest waste partner with spare capacity and then connects to them digitally as so they can do the waste job. This model optimises underutilised resource, improves speed of response, cuts miles travelled per collection, and supports local business (our waste removal partners). It also dramatically increases productivity through route management, fleet management, customer service associated costs and costs associated with waste disposal.

Our Customers.

The Company’s Key message is “We Kollect Everything”

For us here, its all about offering our customers the ability to book any waste Item for collection and recycling and offering them the widest choice – whatever, whenever and wherever they need waste collected.
